Injectable dermal fillers and neurotoxins such as BOTOX®, Dysport®,
Restylane® and Juvederm®
XC have become the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States.
In 2008, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, over
3.7 million injectable procedures were performed, making them the most popular
cosmetic procedures. "Dermal fillers" are a class of injectable drugs
that restore the skin's volume and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, lasting
between several months to a year.
BOTOX ® Cosmetic has revolutionized the cosmetics industry
and is the gold standard for aesthetic treatments: it reverses the effects of
facial wrinkles such as Crow's feet, worry lines, and laugh lines. BOTOX®
injections are non-invasive, non-surgical procedures that have been
administered over 10 million times since 2002. Results may not be as effective
in patients over the age of 65. Another option is a similar competitor known as
Dysport ® and it targets the same areas at BOTOX®, such as the frown lines
between the eyebrows.
Juvederm®XC and Restylane® are both dermal fillers that replace
lost volume and restore youthful contours to the skin and smooth away facial
wrinkles and folds like the lines known as nasolabial folds (nose to the
corners of the mouth). They also provide a fuller appearance for lip
augmentation, deeper folds and marionette lines. Restylane® has been used in
over 70 countries and in more than 1.4 million treatments in the United States
since 2000. Both types of injections are based on hyaluronic acid, a naturally
occurring substance in the body that provides volume and fullness to the skin,
so fillers replace the hyaluronic acid the skin has lost (from aging, sunlight
exposure and other factors).
